GOVT TO BUY COTTON @ Rs. 3000/- PER QUINTAL, WHILE FARMERS SPEND @ AVERAGE Rs. 4625/- PER QUINTAL TO GROW THEM... (30th September 2010, 1400 Hrs)

Is Maharastra Government all set to increase the rate of farmers’ suicide in Vidarbha this year with State Cooperative Minister Harshvardhan Patil’s announcement on 29th September that – Maharastra Government will buy cotton at Govt’s Minimum Support Price (MSP) Scheme @ of Rs. 3000/- a quintal. Farmers have already spend more than Rs. 4625/- per quintal of yield, if they are lucky enough to get an average yield of 4 quintals per acre... farmers are devastated by hearing such an atrocious rate this year...

The excessive rainfall this year is going to have more adverse effect this year, many farmers feel and those who have less than 2 acres land will have no option left. I wonder how such policies are being taken without really looking at the ground realities of poor farmers. I am not an expert in the field of agriculture but basic calculations reveals the below mentioned facts:

A farmer spends the following PER ACRE on BT Cotton:

1.      LABOUR: Rs.5000/- for tilling the land & sowing of seeds + Rs. 3000/- for removing weeds from the farm + Rs. 2000/- for harvesting 4 quintals of cotton = Rs. 10,000/-

2.      SEEDS: Rs.1500/- for 900 gms

3.      FERTILSERS: Rs. 5000/-

4.      PESTICIDES: Rs. 2000/-

TOTAL INVESTMENT = Rs. 18,500/- for 4 quintals of cotton yield, if a farmer is lucky as heavy rainfall has damaged a great amount of the yield.

PER QUINTAL = Rs. 4625/-

WHAT A FARMER GETS FROM GOVT = Rs. 3000/- Per Quintal

Who will give the farmers Rs. 1625/- more to just break even with his investment?

How will his family survive if the farmer is going to lose Rs.1625/- per quintal?

Who will be blamed for taking and making such policies?

Will the Agriculture Minister & Prime Minister allow more farmers to commit suicide this year because of such policy that is against the farmers’ interest?

I only hope the Maharastra Government will change the announced rate to buy cotton this year to help the farmers survive to grow more cotton in coming years for the benefit of the nation...

TEMBHALI'S DARK FUTURE

http://news.rediff.com/slide-show/2010/sep/28/slide-show-1-end-of-the-road-for-tembhali.htm

A SMALL TRIBAL VILLAGE TEMBHALI GETS ELECTRICITY & A TELEPHONE BECAUSE PM IS VISITING ON 29th SEPTEMBER (28th September 2010, 0015 Hrs)

Tomorrow (29th Sept) our Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh will be visiting a tribal village called Tembhali in Nandurbar district to inaugurate the Unique Identity Card. And guess what? Almost overnight the facade of the tribal village has changed for better because Mr. Singh is visiting there...

Tembhali is situated on the bank of Gomai river bordering Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh with a population of 2000 villagers. While the CWG’s work is taking ages to get complete, the district administration in the small unknown (till now) tribal village have built a cement concrete road almost overnight and provided electricity to 100 houses under Rajiv Gandhi Electrification Scheme... imagine where were these district administration since 1947??? Why the village never got electricity before the Prime Minister had to pay a visit (for vote bank obviously) since the last six plus decades??? Any answers Dr. Singh???

Newspapers report says that a telephone set was installed at Tembhali’s Gram Panchayat Member Subhash Sonawane’s house... Ration shops, old school building, gram panchayat office, aganwadis and primary school of the village have a brand new look with fresh whitewash... all these happened because the PM is visiting... what a sham!!! Really, the UPA – II government has no shame at all for neglecting the interior rural villages of India, where electricity, drinking water, roads, sanitation and proper schools are not meant for the less fortunate ones... while they can spend crores and crores on, for a 14-day sports extravaganza to put the nation to shame with corruption seeping from every single drop of these white-clad political leaders...

All these years the poor tribals must have not even seen how a ration card looks like when they were given new ration card and like a magical wand working out of nowhere, work was being in progress to fill up prescribed form on computer in village’s old school building as all key officials are on the double to get the work done before PM arrives on 29th September to launch the UID card...

The reason I am sharing this piece of news with the world is because I just want everyone to know that things can be done almost overnight because of fear factor but they are never done if they are sanctioned through the red tape mechanism... If I would have been PM, I would be visiting one remote village every day, so that every single village will be lucky like Tembhali... but our PM prefers to sleep even when the Parliament is in full session... and mind you he sleeps well with all the noise and hungama...

But there is an after effect also, which is much uglier than the rosy picture that you have just read above... no sooner the PM will depart, the computer from the school will be lifted to some official’s house, new ration cards will be snatched away back from the villagers by officials, electricity supply will be cut and what not...

Well, God save my country from such leaders and system!!!

(26th September 2010, 1645 Hrs)

RAM RAM (25th September 2010, 1025 Hrs)

No, it is not a religious post or else about the sun sign Ram, as many may have thought by just reading the title... I am glad you have not overlooked or neglected to read this lovely post...

Every morning during my practice run I encounter few people, who have become regular now but today, something beautiful happened. Beautiful because it made me smile so early in the morning. I was running when I saw a very old man, perhaps in his mid-eighties, on the other side of the road. Without much thought, I was just passing by him when out of the blue, this great man said aloud – “Ram Ram!” And with a smile I responded to him cheerfully “Ram Ram kaka”... It was so unexpected and impromptu...

Now many people will wonder what makes this ordinary old man in his mid-eighties so great in my eyes... well, in my beautiful country “Ram Ram” is a beautiful loving way of greeting each other by village folks. This old man, whom I don’t even know or seen earlier, who could barely stand erect because of his old age, was taking his early morning walk and said to me in such a loving way “Ram Ram” that it brought the first smile of the day for me... What a beautiful start for a day to start with a loving smile blessed by the ordinary, yet great, man with whom I have no connection at all. And while I was passing by, I heard behind my back his loud voice again and again greeting whosoever was passing by him...

Such loving passion to greet strangers on the street, I wondered how beautiful his upbringing must have been as compared to most of us, including me of course! He might be a highly educated person or may be one among the less fortunate for not being able to study at all in his lifetime. But one thing reflected for sure by his love to share a very good morning with fellow citizen that his upbringing must have been just-just so perfect, beautiful and amazing in all the respect! What a way man! I tell you, in my mind after that moment I was having a debate as to why everyone is not like this great old man... who not only gets joy in greeting others but also give joyful smiles to others with just two simple words – “Ram Ram”!

Tomorrow onwards, I will also try this magical words with strangers I meet or cross during my early morning run. I maybe or may not be as lucky as the loving old man to get response from others, but no matter what... I will spread the cheer in others life just like he taught me so early in the morning... I am sure if I happen to meet him again, I would love to spend some time with the loving Kaka (uncle in a respectful manner) to learn some more beautiful lessons of life!

Thank you Kaka for touching my life in such a beautiful way! Hats off to you with my deepest regards and respect for you!!! You have taught me how to smile without any reasons at all...

समय (24th September 2010, 2030 Hrs)

THE FRIEND WHO HAD MORE CONFIDENCE IN ME THAN I HAD IN MYSELF (21st September 2010, 1155 Hrs)

Let me take you back to the year 1999 in Hyderabad, where I was struggling to find a suitable job for me after the restaurant project was shelved. Yes, like most of us, I too, was frustrated with life and the system and to an extent even with my destiny... Hyderabad seemed to me like ready to kill... now I smile thinking about those dreadful period...

I was working as the Project Manager of a multi-cuisine restaurant that was supposed to be the envy at Banjara Hills... the only thing was that the project never came up and so as a jobless fellow, I used to write few copies for my advertising dear friend Ramana. He always used to tell me to try my luck in Bombay, the dream city of every Indian. However, I have had two unsuccessful stints (as a Production Manager in a Jeans Manufacturing Unit and trading on individual capacity micro-chips, electronic accessories and readymade garments) before in Bombay and the crowded life in train, bus and everywhere made me to think twice to go there once again. However, I have always believed that ‘destiny leads us towards our goal or life’. So while I was struggling I bought the Annual copy of A & M (Advertising & Marketing) – a lovely magazine on the ad world. From here my journey began...

The annual copy had top 100 ad agencies covered with all the information and detail of creative directors, CEO and owners... so I picked up 10 top agencies and wrote to them. 8 of them said they didn’t have any vacancy and out of the two, Lintas send me a copy test that was supposed to be submitted in 48 hours and the tenth one never replied. After 10 days, I received a letter from Lintas stating I had cleared their copy test and if I was visiting Bombay, I should meet the National Creative Director for an opening (I never got the job in Lintas when I arrived in Bombay). Ramana was very happy about the development and at the same time, my friend Madan Patil was getting married in Alibaug, so his invitation and Raju Mishra’s assurance of a place to live in Bombay... all played important role to pull me back to Bombay.

Ramana had more confidence in my capabilities to write good effective copy, catchy slogans and create new ideas for ad campaigns and this time, he said, “Come what may, don’t come back and stick there somehow. I know this time you won’t come back for sure.” Honestly, I never had such confidence in me but Ramana... he is a gem of a person and a great friend! I never went back to Hyderabad after 1999, instead my destiny took me to Vidarbha... after living life in Bollywood as a film journalist and Editor of couple of Interiors magazines... Imagine I had  never planned anything because I never knew I would or could become a journalist. In fact, without any journalism course or degree of Mass Media etc., destiny of my hunger made me a journalist. Similarly, when I started this mission, never in my wildest dream did I think that I would shift so soon to Vidarbha leaving Bombay – the Dream City! But then, we humans have no control over destiny!

The reason why I am writing about Ramana is that his valuable contribution for this movement needs a special mention here. We have shared such lovely rapport over the years that we know we can demand help from each other at any given time of life. So for the paper envelopes unit, I had called Ramana and requested him to design stickers to be stuck on office mail envelopes and within ten days’ time we received today the bunch of stickers. I was truly so happy and immediately called to thank him. Yes, Ramana we are truly grateful to you for your kind support for the farmers’ widows of Vidarbha. Rare are such friends in today’s modern world but I must confess I am blessed with some very special friends in my life... who will be always there to support me!

(20th September 2010, 1000 Hrs)

(18th September 2010, 1355 Hrs)

(16th September 2010, 1245 Hrs)

“Fertile lands should not be acquired for industrial developments!” – Sonia Gandhi (15th September 2010, 1150 Hrs)

Kudos to Sonia Gandhi for making such a statement at the time when India is not only losing poor farmers to suicide but also fertile lands of the farmers are being acquired by government and rich industrialists to fulfil their greed in the name of country’s developments! Like many others in the nation, I am optimistic about such a declaration by Mrs. Gandhi, however, it should just not remain a statement which made headlines in various dailies in the last few days. I only pray to hope that Mrs. Gandhi really means what she said and that she will make sure a law is soon tabled in the parliament to approve and enforce strict legislation at the earliest regarding this serious issue.

From 70% rural population, the surge in urban population has seen the rural belt being reduced to almost 50% (in 2011 census, the urban population is likely to take a lead for the first time since independence) in current scenario, a grave danger that many policy makers sitting in their air-conditioned offices are not even thinking about. What will happen when there will be no farmlands left, farmers, who either are killing self because of government policies and natural calamities or else losing farmers migrating to cities? Will these industrial developments by any means be able to feed the nation? Will the nation’s fast growth of 8.5+ GDP’s growth feed the billion plus population, as it is millions are dying of hunger when the nation has the audacity to allow food grains to rot to the tune of 58,000 crores?

The nation is fast losing the farmers’ population because of various reasons and no one, I repeat, no one is really even bothered about the catastrophic disaster the nation is heading towards. The Prime Minister, one of the leading economists in the nation has the audacity to admonish the Supreme Court’s humanitarian  decision to order the UPA – II government to distribute food grains free instead of allowing them to rot... how callous one can be! Dr. Manmohan Singh is the same man, who was begging to the whole nation to come in power once again and had said – “No need to worry about the drought situation, we have enough food grains to feed the nation. No one will die of hunger!” Once he came to power, due to his economic policies the prices of essential food items saw a steep increase that the nation has never witnessed since 1947, even snatching away the holy dal from the poor’s plate to make it a rich delicacy! What a shame!

Yes, he was right when he said the nation has enough stock of food grains but he has killed millions of poor hungry Indians by allowing the food grains to rot in FCI’s open-air godowns in the last one year. I only hope Sonia Gandhi’s statement is not a mere statement like our Prime Minister’s, otherwise, the catastrophe is going to see a situation that Mozambique had seen only recently. Yes, there were riots in the African nation because of food shortage created by various bigwig players, who control the food industry. Many died and all for the sake of food... imagine the NCW has not even revealed their 48-Hour Probe on Bundelkhand farmers selling their wives to feed their children even after 12 long months... how many 48 hours have passed in the last 12 months Mrs. Girija Vyas? Has Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi or else the Prime Minister even bothered to tell Mrs. Vyas as to what the nation has done for the Bundelkhand farmers? Why is the media silent after 12 long months after breaking the story last year?

While in urban cities, restoration of old buildings have become the priority of the state government to safeguard heritage structures by spending crores and crores... sadly, no one is even bothered to safeguard the fertile lands of mera Bharat mahaan! WHY? I wish to ask by safeguarding the heritage structures will the government be able to feed the nation. And what is the fault of poor farmers of the nation whose lands are being snatched away from them in the name of developments and are being paid a pittance? What will the farmers do when they have no land? These are some of the answers that Sonia Gandhi has to really think about and if at this juncture we are not serious to protect our fertile lands, the time is not far when there will be no farmlands left to grow food grains for the billion plus population. Will the industrialists grow food in their factories then? Points to ponder and act fast and seriously!

Green mountains are being turned into plane grounds almost everywhere in the country to disturb the ecological balance so that the poor will suffer more with natural calamities and disasters. Why no one is interested to safeguard our ecology... why is our Environment Minister Jayaram Ramesh only interested to safeguard forests, why not the mountains? I was shocked to see the mountain in Powai, Mumbai turning into plane grounds with none objecting about it... tomorrow you will see high-rise and malls and multiplexes in the same area... the lovely green mountain ranges near Navi Mumbai is being raped too and by 2011 it will become another plane grounds and so are the lovely green mountain ranges near Butibori, near Nagpur... if mining is a serious threat to ecological balance, the mountain ranges are equally important.

I do hope Sonia Gandhi will take stern steps to safeguard nation’s future by acting fast and firmly to safeguard the fertile lands, green forests and green mountain ranges for the generation next... otherwise even before the younger generation wake up from their fast paced life, they won’t have fertile lands to grow food for them and an environment that will be polluted for them to die in their early 20s...

(15th September 2010, 0020 Hrs)

THE UNAWARE URBAN POPULATION OF MY NATION (13th September 2010, 0210 Hrs)

The main cause of farmers’ suicide in the nation according to me is the selflessness of the farmers’ community, who have, since ages, thought about the nation first before self and their own families. This fine and foolish trait of the poor farmers have and always will make them to remain poor all their lives to live in miseries. ‘Fine’, because this is what humanity is all about... serve others first even if it means to stay hungry. ‘Foolish’, because in today’s modern world, they are suffering miseries and deaths because for them, growing cotton or soyabean is more important for the nation’s progress rather than growing wheat, rice, pulses and vegetables for their own families first. The day every farmer realises this aspect, even the government will be shaken by such a move to provide all the necessary subsidies, irrigation infrastructure and other benefits to the farmers’ community and not ignore them like they have been since the last six plus decades.

Yes, such a thing is surely a very-very long distant dream and hence the poor farmers of every nation are exploited to die in miseries. The poor remains poor because he is ready to share whatever he has with others, while the rich becomes richer because he knows how to grab what is others... It is shocking that the urban population of my nation is totally unaware about what all is happening in the rural India... farmers families are living their lives in less than Rs. 1000/- a month feeding four mouths, there are tribal communities and tribes, who have never seen what or how woollen clothes look or feel like, there are poor ‘moosahari’ tribe in the state of Bihar who eat rats to survive, there are village women who use sand, ash, dirty clothes, newspapers and what not during their periods (they haven’t seen or else cannot even afford a piece of clean cloth forget about buying sanitary pads), there are villages which drink water that is not even fit (by urban standard) to wash dirty utensils, there are villages which has not seen electricity and sanitation since independence... well there are children, who don’t even remember their fathers’ presence because they have committed suicide... there are children who sleep with dead bodies to escape the wrath of chilly winter... Rupee 1/- is paid to poor villagers by Government’s MGNREGS for a 10 hours’ day labour in the hot sun and high temperatures of Rajasthan...well the list is painfully endless...

It is not only shocking that most of us living in modern India are not even bothered to be aware of such gory inhuman facts of the so-called great nation, who is more pre-occupied with Common Wealth Games... crores are spent and gobbled by the system and administrators under the proper knowledge of our nation’s Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, but also it is shameful that when such facts are told to the urbanites, they don’t even shudder or react in amazement, surprise, shock, pain or else with any emotions... we, humans have become so-so emotionless that we don’t even feel anything at all when we hear or see such lives being lived in the rural India... I was appalled when our Prime Minister said the Supreme Court should not interfere in policy formulation in reference to 58,000 crores worth of rotten food grains... how callous the man can be to lead the 1.2 billion people by starving 40% of nation’s malnourished children and 40% (or even more because no agency has the proper data of poor in the country) poor, who live in less than Rs.20/- a day... The Prime Minister can safeguard his corrupt Agriculture Minister against the Supreme Court’s order to distribute free food grains to the poor rather than to allow them to rot in open air godowns.

While I was accompanying Mr. Anshu Gupta (GOONJ’s Founder), a group of young educated girls didn’t even reacted when he was sharing his life experiences about the plight of rural India... the man was sorry to know how ignorant the urban population were in today’s fast paced life. Even when I was talking to a bunch of students in one of the colleges in Vidarbha, I couldn’t really see if anyone was really bothered about farmers’ suicide in their own backyard... it is not pathetic or ironical but it is a sad state of affair because our education system is at fault. Parents, teachers and elders have forgotten their duties to teach their children the basic fundamental rule of humanity, manners and the importance of reading to expand the horizon of knowledge. Even with all the pains and miseries in life, if any urban person enters a village, irrespective of his colour, creed, religion or language... s/he will be welcomed with open arms and will be served whatever is available in the poor villagers’ homes with pure love and respect... such warmth one will never get in any urban cities of India.

They say – ‘Ignorance is bliss’ but the ignorant urbanites are living a more stressful life than the villagers and they are running to accumulate all the unwanted things in life to increase their worry even more. Honestly, I was also doing the same thing but since I have travelled widely all over India (cities & villages) and because I have had a pedigree of reading newspapers every morning, I used to keep abreast with most of the things about life, world and everything that interests me... so that I can join any discussion with anyone on any topics. Knowledge and languages are the two most important tools one must always possess in one’s life to face any kind of situation. When I was shifting from Mumbai to Wardha, I gave away most of the things to my friends and I felt so nice from within... I realised how happy my friends were to get those things. I felt relieved and light. I am happy to live in Wardha with two pair of jeans and five T-shirts... with no fridge, TV or even a cupboard... The joy to live with minimum needs and requirements is truly blissful.

While the rural India has always served the urban India, sadly, the urban India has always exploited the selfless poor rural belt to satisfy their greed and hunger to rule. All the food in cities are grown in the rural India but the sad state of affair is that farmers of our nation has to sell their wives to moneylenders so they can feed their hungry malnourished children to live another day; farmers have to commit suicide because if there is no drought, there is floods to wash away all their hard earned money and hard work to grow crops for the nation... and what does the nation gives the farmers? A compensation of Rs. 1 Lakh is given to the widow to live all her life with three or even more children to feed with no source of income whatsoever...

I still remember very distinctively (while I was walking the streets of Mumbai to raise funds to support suicide farmers’ families in Vidarbha) how a very educated traveller in Mumbai Local Train’s First Class compartment said very rudely to me (when I requested him ‘one rupee from every Indian to support farmers’ families’) – “Hah! Government has waived farmers’ loan so why are you collecting funds for them? The farmers don’t deserve any sympathy after the loan waiving.” Well, what can one say how many farmers really got the benefits of loan waiving scheme? The gentleman is not even aware about how the villagers are dying in his own state or nation and as a human being didn’t even had any emotions left for the poor suffering widows and children of suicide farmers... there was another gentleman who said farmers are enjoying the maximum benefits of government policies and when I asked him is that the reason why they are so happy that they are committing suicide? He was speechless and turned his face to talk to another friend.

Every single grain that we all are eating is tainted with farmers’ blood and sweat and everyone of us owe not only gratitude but also we should acknowledge the fact that if there will be no farmers and farmlands left in the nation... from where will the food come and how the generation today will survive with their children and grand children in the near future? Think about it because modern day developments are surely taking us to a future where there will be no food grains to eat but we will have to kill each other to eat flesh to survive just another day!

(12th September 2010, 1500 Hrs)
